Carefully restored world map created in 1587 shows unicorns and other mythical creatures

The map is fascinating, partly because of it’s perspective – the view of the planet from the North Pole looking down, and partly because of it’s amazing detail and artistry. And just in case you’re curious, unicorns are apparently to be found in northern Siberia according to this map.

HMS Unicorn

HMS Unicorn is a surviving sailing frigate of the successful Leda class, although the original design had been modified by the time that the Unicorn was built, to incorporate a circular stern and “small-timber” system of construction. Listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, Unicorn is now a museum ship in Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Beasts! Exhibition at Durham Cathedral

Durham Cathedral in Durham, UK is hosting an exhibition called Beasts! from February 20 through June 10. The exhibition includes items that folks in medieval times believed were ‘proof’ of mythical creatures’ existence, including unicorns, sea serpents, dragons, griffins, wyverns, harpies, and the phoenix.
